HOVERCRAFT - Experiment Below - (Blast First/Mute-UK-1998)

Hovercraft.A defunct band from Seattle, founded 1993 by Ryan Campbell (alias Campbell 2000) and Beth Liebling (alias Sadie 7, Eddie Vedder's former wife), out of the ashes of the band called Space Helmet, which also included members of Magnog. They gave their last concert 16th February 2001 in Seattle.

It is rumored that Eddie Vedder was a drummer for this band going first as full-time drummer under the name Jerome230 and then joining them on tour later on.

v.a.- Orecchiette Alla Pestona - (Terapia Intensiva/Kollettivo Indios-Italy-1998)

Number 1 of  this seire-I have already posted the Number 2-or called Bis-compiled by Roberto Liuzzi, who used to write a newsletter called Contro. I cannot find my copy, this is the digital one passed to me by Roberto, I got back in touch with him not long ago, he has nowadays a blog: Tribe`s Union, which mainly focused on the Italian HC punk scene.

This compilation offer to us a selection of great bands coming from Apulia region, active on the end of the 90s.The booklet reports info and contacts. I have translated, freely, the introduction to this sampler:

This compilation assembled by the chefs Terapia Intensiva and Indios Collective, it was born from the will to get together in 1 tape the music by bands around us. a sort of manifesto of the expressions of the DIY punk scene from the Apulia region. This scene is close to us geographically, we live in Apulia. Maybe this is the first action of this kind in our region. We thought to make it as a fundraiser, eventually we want to use the profit out of it to build a DIY screen printing to print T-shirts, stickers and more stuff and use the money raised from their sale as a fund to help various organizations (animalist,anti-army, ecologist...)which we care of. Actions that we have had in our minds for a long time, this idea is definitely something that we can define as THINK GLOBALLY-ACT LOCALLY, this is our Compilaton Orecchiette Alla Pestona. The dish is very yummy and we hope that the tape will be yummy too.
This sampler will not stay alone, in fact, we are already thinking to release a second volume next year, a volume that will include other bands that we couldn`t fit in here for various reasons. So, stay tuned..you can write to our addresses...
NDT addresses are very obsolete.

To complete this post I am adding the tracklist and the introduction from the booklet. A very big thank you to Roberto for his help and kindness.Enjoy it.

RONRUINS - Ketsunoana - (Pandemonium Records-France-1998)

Super trio playing prog-tech experimental fast music with many times changes and incredible new dimensions mixing jazzcore with prog-rock passages.I have, already written about the fantastic band called Ruins when I posted their old tape The Best Of Ruins, and I have also written about their super skilled drummer Tatsuya Yoshida. In this cd they are jojned by Ron Anderson, a multi-instrumentalist intuitive music maker who plays traditional instruments like the electric guitar but also will use anything that can make a sound - including the recording studio. He has nearly 60 recordings released. He has his own Record Label "RA Sounds": ronanderson-molecules.com, Bandcamp

Tatsuya Yoshida (b. Jan 9, 1961) is a prominent Japanese avant-garde/jazz/experimental drummer, composer, producer & sound engineer, one of key figures on Japan's underground scene. Founder of the innovative rhythm section duo Ruins (plus a few Ruins-related projects), zeuhl band Koenjihyakkei, prog/fusion/polyrhythmic jazz trio Korekyojinn, acapella vocal group Zubi Zuva/Zubi Zuva X, etc. Runs Magaibutsu label and the eponymous studio.

Since the early eighties, Yoshida had played and collaborated with many critically praised Japanese bands, such as Zeni Geva, High Rise (2), YBO², Musica Transonic, Vasilisk, Dissecting Table, various Acid Mothers Temple units, ZOA, and Aburadako. Nicknamed "devil from the East," Tatsuya Yoshida is an extremely prolific and technically skilled drummer, praised for his vicious raw energy and the ability to play superhumanly fast while keeping even the most complex rhythmic structures sharp and pristine.

The drummer has worked with the entire avant-garde 'hall of fame' of the last four decades, from Fred Frith and Derek Bailey to Keiji Haino and Otomo Yoshihide. John Zorn, who praised Tatsuya as an "undisputed master drummer of the Japanese underground," invited him to play in the seminal jazz/grindcore unit PainKiller (2) on several occasions after Mick Harris' departure, and had a huge impact on Yoshida's recognition overseas.

Tatsuya was a long-time collaborator of a controversial noise artist Juntaro Yamanouchi. He participated in one of The Gerogerigegege's very few documented early 'secret shows' (which were happening at fetish/S&M gay clubs), released on '91 Live Greatest Hits CD. In January of 1987 at a private Hanzōmon residence in Tokyo, Yoshida (equipped with vibrator, whip & enema) joined J.Y. on toy instruments to create a rather sparse accompaniment for Gero 36 who screamed and moaned in pleasure and pain while masturbating and self-pleasuring/torturing in every unimaginable way. According to the 'Live History (1986~1990)' list in the booklet, it was the Gerogerigegege's third-ever concert: just a couple months after Nov '86 'maiden voyage' at WASEDA University Auditorium and the same week the band played at Antiknock in Shinjuku. Tatsuya Yoshida also played drums and announced tracks on '94 thrash/1-2-3-4 noisecore Instruments Disorder (170 Songs CD)—perhaps the loudest and harshest Gerogerigegege's albums to date. Finally, Yoshida mastered several of the band's albums, including an hour-long minimal ambient/drone None Friendly '99 CD, and their last official release prior to 2001–16 hiatus, Saturdaynight Big Cock Salaryman CD EP.  official webpge: magaibutsu.com Pandemonium Records was a French noise-rock label from Marseille, launched in the 1990's by Philippe Petit. CO-FUSION ‎- Co-Fu - (Sublime Records-Japan-1998)

Co-Fusion's debut, CO-FU, starts with the bass madness of "Strutin'"... and that's before the crazed horn sample comes in. "Zit'r Bug" has a sharper edge to it with its metallic overtones and insistent drum bass, while the breaks on "You Looking For" helps secure the swarming synths above it. The clattering percussion on "Cycle," as well, shows off their real strength: those beats. The metallic tones come back on "Dizzy," accompanied by a brighter melodic line, while "A.T.P." strikes a straight-forward 4/4. A perky electro creeps into "Early Summer Daze," and "Jungler Gray" brings in a thoughtful guitar in towards the end. A hint of funk enlivens "Wilbee Wilbee" and a bit of sci-fi spaciness whistles into "Five Forty." And "Torn Open" closes the album on a more pure note of funk, reappropriating some soundtrack horns to be placed into a series of quick breaks. There's no confusion with Co-Fusion. click me (review by scoundrel, published on Discogs July 16,2016) Sublime Recs Offical Webpage

CANEPHORA-At A LOss For Words-(Moo Cow Records-USA-1998)

Where do I start with this beast... I mean, holy shit man. At A Loss For Words is the most tormented and intense metal I've ever heard, let alone deathcore! The animosity this little 7 inch possesses makes even the most spiteful of metal bands like Ildjarn sound like Kiss. And here I thought metalcore's aggressiveness peaked with Arkangel - and Arkangel were monoliths of sheer raw aggression and heaviness. If Arkangel was a massacre in this sense, then this band is an absolute genocide. However, that wouldn't be the proper way to phrase things for what this band would try and, successfully, accomplish.

You see, Canephora wasn't out to achieve genocide, it was out to murder as many people as it can with it's bare-hands. The constant dynamics and dense brooding atmosphere makes At A Loss... feel like a knife being stabbed repeatedly through your chest and blood soaking into your eyes. I wouldn't doubt that this is certainly what plays through a mind of a serial killer when he's on his next hunt. It sounds like something that can only be tapped by reaching into the deepest corners of a psychopath.

While only being 13 minutes long with both songs being 6 minutes long, it's feels extremely alienating just to get through and leaves you with an unnerving aura that steeps into your subconscious. The core root of Canephora's intimidation lies in it's consistency of buildup and releases. It almost feels like they're playing with you by giving you a few gasps of air before suffocating you again with dense, swirling, angular death metal tremolo picking and blastbeats. In the midst of all the bludgeoning songwriting you have this insane vocal work which really makes you feel the forlornness of the situation you've gotten yourself in. Hell, I don't even think they actually acquired an actual singer, I think they just picked up a poor bastard off the street and started torturing him and threw the audio of it over the songs. His vocal work is something you have to really listen to because I can't put into words properly how great he is at fitting what this band is trying to realize.

Don't play this too loud or else the cops will definitely be called - in fact, don't play this at all without headphones on or else you'll be getting some really concerning looks.  (review by Bystandard, published on Discogs-14/Dec/2020)   click me
