CANEPHORA-At A LOss For Words-(Moo Cow Records-USA-1998)

Where do I start with this beast... I mean, holy shit man. At A Loss For Words is the most tormented and intense metal I've ever heard, let alone deathcore! The animosity this little 7 inch possesses makes even the most spiteful of metal bands like Ildjarn sound like Kiss. And here I thought metalcore's aggressiveness peaked with Arkangel - and Arkangel were monoliths of sheer raw aggression and heaviness. If Arkangel was a massacre in this sense, then this band is an absolute genocide. However, that wouldn't be the proper way to phrase things for what this band would try and, successfully, accomplish.

You see, Canephora wasn't out to achieve genocide, it was out to murder as many people as it can with it's bare-hands. The constant dynamics and dense brooding atmosphere makes At A Loss... feel like a knife being stabbed repeatedly through your chest and blood soaking into your eyes. I wouldn't doubt that this is certainly what plays through a mind of a serial killer when he's on his next hunt. It sounds like something that can only be tapped by reaching into the deepest corners of a psychopath.

While only being 13 minutes long with both songs being 6 minutes long, it's feels extremely alienating just to get through and leaves you with an unnerving aura that steeps into your subconscious. The core root of Canephora's intimidation lies in it's consistency of buildup and releases. It almost feels like they're playing with you by giving you a few gasps of air before suffocating you again with dense, swirling, angular death metal tremolo picking and blastbeats. In the midst of all the bludgeoning songwriting you have this insane vocal work which really makes you feel the forlornness of the situation you've gotten yourself in. Hell, I don't even think they actually acquired an actual singer, I think they just picked up a poor bastard off the street and started torturing him and threw the audio of it over the songs. His vocal work is something you have to really listen to because I can't put into words properly how great he is at fitting what this band is trying to realize.

Don't play this too loud or else the cops will definitely be called - in fact, don't play this at all without headphones on or else you'll be getting some really concerning looks.  (review by Bystandard, published on Discogs-14/Dec/2020)   click me

v.a-OVERGROW TO OVERTHROW-(Bindrune Recordings-USA-2020)

***FUNDS ARE NOW BEING DISTRIBUTED TO ORGANIZATIONS! Thank you so much for the support.***

THIRTY ONE TRACKS TO COMBAT RACISM.
Voices from across the Metal and Punk spectrum have united to not only speak out against racism and in support of those who are in the streets actively demonstrating, but work to actively support a fight that all of us must take on.

Digital only. All proceeds to support:
• Black Lives Matter - Over-arching movement to combat racism and fight for social justice in the US and Canada.
• Life After Hate - A nonprofit in the US that seeks to combat racism by providing resources to help people leave racist movements, as well as help de-radicalize violent Far Right extremists.

"I am a person of color who lives in Minneapolis and a featured musician on this compilation.
I love this city and its culture, but it would be dishonest not to acknowledge the segregation that still permeates this city. I see it in a geopolitical sense, but also in the hearts and minds of people I speak to here. The death of George Floyd has filled us all with grief; everyone other than those with the most extreme
racist beliefs can watch the video and immediately recognize it as a comprehensive moral failing.
With that in mind, I want to emphasize that George Floyd's death is not an anomaly, and that the problem exists on a larger scale than whether four particular Minneapolis police officers are convicted. This same incident plays out at least once a week somewhere in the United States, and it is usually not brought to national attention like this. The outrage is usually less vocal because there is some plausible deniability: the video shakes or wavers for a second and we can't quite see what happened, or the victim yelled something threatening, or the police told the bystanders to stop filming, or sometimes the body cameras are turned off, or sometimes there simply isn't footage at all. But it is happening in our world all the same, and what we all saw transpire on May 25, 2020 is an uncensored vision of the culture we have created.
If I could ask one thing to everyone who would listen, I would say: the next time this happens (and it will happen again), will we allow our friends and colleagues to follow the beaten path of preying on the deniability, steering the conversation toward the deceased's criminal history and asking whether they were on drugs or trespassing or didn't put their hands up fast enough? Will we play that role of devil's advocate ourselves, even while knowing that we are defending an institution of immense power, whose labor union will all but guarantee its officers stay out of jail, keep their jobs and receive back pay regardless of whether they have committed a wrong? Or will we dare to question the status quo, even when the cameras aren't rolling, and lend a voice to our fallen fellow man who no longer has a voice to tell his story?
How we answer this question will shape our communities for generations. If we don't answer correctly, I believe the worst may be yet to come."

The opinions expressed by the individual artists on this comp are the opinions of the individuals comprising those bands, as pertaining to their particular project and in no way represent an over arching narrative that is applicable to every band or Bindrune recordings as a whole, save for this one exception: Every band on this comp, it's organizers and Bindrune recordings stand in opposition and defiance of racism.

Thank you so much for supporting this comp

EMBERS-Memoria Eeterna-(Not On Label-USA-2007)

Embers was a doom / black metal band with Crust edges from Oakland, California, USA.
This seems to be their very first production, a CD ep with 5 powerful tracks mixing some trash/death metal with some crust/doom punk.
Very well played and recorded this production has astonishing drawings/graphics reporting the lyrics too. The whole album is dedicated to a friend called Dominik.
It seems that they are not active any longer, on their Bandcamp Page you`ll find 2 more albums, strange enough this one is not there.
Enjoy it.

CROMLECH-Descanting The Altered Dimension-(Self Released-Italy-1993)

"The Cromlech is an ancient group of stones consisting of one large flat stone supported by several vertical ones" from the Cambridge dictionary.
There are at the least a dozen bands with such name on the Encyclopedia Metallum yet this one is not listed there.
This combo is, in fact, from southern Italy and plays a slow form of doom death metal, in this demo, they offer us 4 tracks accompanied by a spartan cover sleeve with few info.
Enjoy it.

TRAUMA-Trauma-(Nuclear Disaster Records-Italy-2015)

It happens that there are probably thousands of bands with this name.
In this case, this is a special one-off project by Claudio founder of this DIY Label and also drummer/guitarist of many bands, amongst them Epatite HC  of which I have already posted a Cdr.
In this project, Claudio wrote all the songs, plays all the instruments and sings. He is also the sound engineer as this was all recorded in his own private studio.
If you are into powerful tunes, fast music, angry vocals mixing HC Punk and doom metal then this is for you.
An excellent production.
Enjoy it.

ZARAZA-Slavic Blasphemy-(Musicus Phycus-Canada-1997)

Zaraza means Plague in polish, this is an amzing project by polish musicians living in Canada.
"Formed in Montreal, Canada in early 1993. They combined elements from doom/death metal with those of eastern european industrial. Imagine Laibach doing metal.
The project was laid to rest officially in July 2006."(from discogs)
A wikipedia page about them is here.
"Debut 1997 CD of this legendary Canadian duo.
Total experimental industrial doom death metal annihilation.
Head-on collision of old-school doom/death metal (Unholy, Winter, My Dying Bride) with the ugliness of old-school industrial (SWANS, Laibach, Skin Chamber).
Chosen as one of the Top 10 Albums of 1998 by Gino Filicetti (Chronicles of Chaos webzine). "(from their archive.org page)
Enjoy it.

LE LIGNE MAGINOT-Le Ligne Maginot-(Self Released-Austria-2010)

la ligne maginot was formed at the end of summer 2009. we see ourselves as an anarchist collective of musicians that live in and support left-radical,
autonomous structures. the production of our music is made in as much a d.i.y way as possible and without the use of any labels.
all that considered we are not stiff, dogmatic or theory-driven zombies.
and just to make sure: we are anti-capitalist, anti-fascist, anti-homophobic, anti-patriarchal, anti-racist and anti-sexist.
if you don't agree with all of these terms don't bother asking us to play and go fuck yourself!
for all the others: feel free to get in touch with us and see you at the next show.(From Last Fm)

The first thing you inescapably notice about this record is the beautiful artwork (by an unidentified Viennese painter). Gorgeous gatefold packaging with really nice vinyl and black inner sleeves, this is the debut full-length release by Vienna-based La Ligne Maginot. This is an immensely complex album, lyrically and musically. Peeling this back like an onion reveals a mixture of down-tuned hardcore punk with seriously dark metallic overtones and atmospheric textures piercing through waves of thick reverb. It’s reminiscent of some of the early 90’s metallic screamo stuff coming out of Germany, but has a very unique signature to it and stands certainly on its own. It invokes GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR-style crescendos and buildups then unleashes raspy experimental hardcore within seconds. Lyrical overtones paint a bleak existential foray into the decay of society, poetic without sounding contrived, and are well translated from the native Austrian-inflected German. I was blown away by this, and can’t wait to hear more from this mysterious band! (Rob Hanna)
(review from Profane Existence)
I saw this amazing band live in a squatted church in south london during their summer tour - on august 2013. They blew everybody away - 8 musicians on stage with 3 guitars, 2 drums, keyboard, bass and alternating vocals - they were just powerful, beautiful, progressive - dreamlike, metallic and doomish at the same time - a great live act and a pure anarchist way of performing and travelling.
At their distribution point a clear message saying "pay as you want" was close their cds and they didn`t mind swapping cds or t-shirts with other distros. This cd is artefully crafted with an original package - a screenprinted fabric make a folder for the cd - it comes with a patch and beautiful little booklet with lyrics in german and english translations.
Their attitude reminded me of the punk bands from the 90s, very little sense of business but a great communication and antagonism of the idea that comes into practice.
This is just a little gem from the unknown underground european punk scene. A must for the lovers of great and original music with no musical borders.
