SCREAM - Concerto Al C.S.A. Udine - (Not On Label-Italy-1988)

Scream was a hardcore punk band from Virginia, USA, formed in 1981 by brothers Pete (vocals) and Franz (guitar) Stahl, Skeeter Thompson (bass), and Kent Stax (drums). The band was later joined by second guitarist Robert Lee "Harley" Davidson. After the release of their 3rd album, "Banging The Drum", Stax departed and was replaced by Dave Grohl. The band continued for a few more years before splitting in 1990. Dave Grohl went on to find major success with Nirvana and the Foo Fighters. Pete Stahl has also performed with a number of bands, including Wool (2), Goatsnake and Earthlings? and collaborated with Sunn O))) and The Desert Sessions. He was also road manager for Foo Fighters and Queens Of The Stone Age. Franz Stahl was also a member of Wool (2) and, briefly, the Foo Fighters. Kent Stax played drums with Oi! band The Suspects.

Scream has reunited for several reunion shows in the Washington, DC area over the years (with Stax in place of a very busy Grohl, although the latter has made some guest appearances).

DAZ LLOYD- The Circle-(Media Tapes-UK-1988) + Sic Syke-(Self Released-UK-1991)

Second Post about this amazing artists from Scunthorpe, I wrote about him last month when I posted  the tapes : Bill Of Rights and Stand Up And Be Counted.

The Circle was recorded and mixed at 'H.O.M.E. Studios' (on Daz's combined amp/twin cassette deck) March 1988 while Sic Syke was recorded and mixed on the Brougham Road  4-Track during the long and hard (finarr finarr!!!) winter of 90/91.

To make this post more informative I have asked his old mates to write some info about Daz. Unfortunately, he left this world very young. This post is dedicated to his memory and his excellent music. Big thanks to Mark for introducing me to such a great artist, to PJL for digitizing these old tapes and his nice words, and to his family for giving me permission to post his tapes here and on my Youtube channel.
Enjoy it.

 The Circle    Sic Syke

Darren Lloyd (or - like every guy given that first name - Daz to his mates) first appeared on a stage in March 1985 as guitarist in The Demised,
a band he'd co-founded in his native Scunthorpe the previous year.  That band revised and expanded its line-up shortly afterwards, subsequently changing
its name to Declaration, but made no serious headway before breaking up in April 1986.

Over the following couple of years Daz released three cassettes: 'Bill of Rights', 'Stand Up and Be Counted', and 'The Circle'; each was a genuine solo effort with
all vocals, guitars and bass by the man himself (the title of an instrumental on the second tape - "Wot No Drums" - was based on a common reaction to his approach
of those who'd heard its predecessor).  Daz also popped up at a number of local gigs during this period armed only with his guitar (and voice) in a Billy Bragg stylee, but all of this was only half of the picture.

While a stint as second guitarist with established Barton band Aki (soon after Declaration's split) didn't work out, Daz subsequently remained a member of Terminus
for long enough to appear on the first of that band's generous handful of records.  He also joined the 'enigmatic' (and mainly studio-based) Scunthorpe outfit Murderous Musicians,
while a friendship with London-based punk band The Apostles (initially kindled through the post) led to a series of visits to their Hackney HQ -
and an 'exchange visit' by the band's Dave 'LAMF' Fanning to Scunthorpe to appear alongside Daz (and former Declaration drummer Pete) in a one-off outfit named
after the beloved Monty Python skit, The Piranha Brothers.

By the early '90s Daz had moved to London, maintaining his association with The Apostles by recording a fourth tape - 'Sic Syke', now complete with drums! -
at their HQ (with Dave supplying cover art, and fellow Apostles Muzz and Andy providing percussive assistance); it seems that Daz and Dave also reassumed their Piranha alter egos on occasion.
Over the next few years our contact was scant, limited to when our paths happened to cross during Daz's visits to his family in Scunthorpe, but his permanent return home in August 1997 seemed
to hold much promise - for one thing, it seemed that a 'reunion' of the Murderous Musicians was being discussed before he'd even had the time to unpack his cases.

Instead, Daz's relocation to Scunthorpe was followed only a few weeks later by his tragic death; he was days short of his thirty-first birthday.  He is still,
and will always be, remembered fondly by friends, regarded highly by those who'd shared a stage with him at any point, and much missed by all who knew him.  Rock on, Daz.

SMERSH-The Greatest Story Ever Distorted-(KK Records-Belgium-1988)

Beat studio guru Mike Mangino (Pink Noise, Pop-Tarts) and Chris Shepard (Pop-Tarts) formed Smersh as an experimental big-beat techno/industrial project and began releasing cassettes in 1981. Smersh recorded improvised cuts every Monday night, released countless cassettes on their own label, Atlas King, and were featured on more compilations than you can track down. They never played live, never played the same track more than once.

KK Records was a Belgian label that started with EBM/Industrial in the 2nd half of the 80s. During the 90s the style changed into some more experimental pop-electro before it dissolved around 2000.(from Discogs)-click me

fIREHOSE-Peel Session 1988-(Unreleased-1988)

Firehose was formed in the spring of 1986 shortly after the accidental death of D. Boon brought an end to Watt and Hurley's previous band, Minutemen. Crawford, a then 21-year-old Ohio State student and Minutemen fan was invited up on the roof of Camper Van Beethoven's van in Columbus, Ohio.[1] The members of Camper Van Beethoven told Crawford a false rumour that Watt and Hurley were auditioning guitarists for the band.[2] Crawford, having found Watt's phone number in the phone book, called him up and expressed his desire to come out to California and play with them.[3] Still mourning the loss of his friend Boon, Watt initially was not interested and had lost much of his desire to play music,[4] however, Crawford's persistence eventually paid off when he showed up unannounced in San Pedro and asked Watt for the chance to come over and play for him.[3] Watt eventually agreed and the two met with Crawford "auditioning" for Watt by playing him The Who's "I'm One," as well as a few Minutemen songs.[3] Impressed with Crawford's passion and enthusiasm, Watt and Hurley agreed to give the inexperienced "kid" from Ohio a shot and the band was formed. Crawford quickly relocated to San Pedro where he became known as ed fROMOHIO and spent nine months sleeping under a desk in Watt's one-bedroom apartment. The name of the band was taken from a short film of Bob Dylan doing "Subterranean Homesick Blues" as Watt thought it was funny when Dylan held up a cue card for the lyric that said "firehose". The name is stylized as "fIREHOSE" with a lowercase f as a subtle tribute to the Minutemen whose logo was an all caps MINUTEMEN.[2]
