ALVARS ORKESTER-Woodtrip-(SPH-Portugal-1992)

Alvars Orkester is the Swedish project by Jan Svensson and  Joachim Nordwall, both musicians involved in various labels and projects since the end of the 80s.
SPH was a  tape label from Portugal, created by Fernando Cerqueira (a member of Ras.Al.Ghul) and featured a wide range of work from artists like Brume, Alvars Orkester and Maeror Tri.
Here a review originally published on Soft Watch and then re-published on the Discogs page dedicated to this tape.
Enjoy it.

Side A opens with the title track "Woodtrip". Waves of warm, muted sound sweep in, suggesting heat or isolation, The sound gradually builds, the waves flowing across each other in complementary washes, some deep and resonant, some higher-yet-dulled to give an overall pacifying effect. There is no beat, no rhythmic structure, merely wave-upon-wave of swelling sound. This night be described as New Age Industrial - it's a warm factory/machine sound. The depth of sound abates, leaving the higher tones to describe languid shapes and textures ethereal mists hiding unknown things - the thrill of possible danger coupled with an overall sense of security. "Dance In Halfway Under The Earth" swells in on darker, more Industrial sounds, and the higher pitches give it a desolate, isolated sound once more. Feedback flows through the sound, deep and rich, yet full of potential power, an understated threat that it could at any second smash through your speakers like a bolt of electric blue. These sounds follow each other, complementing each other despite their unusual qualities. It's a long & frankly wonderful piece of sound, reminding me of the little I've heard from ARCANE DEVICE.

Side B opens with "Ihn", rising on warm, even hot electronics a little like THROBBING GRISTLE did with their Industrial Introduction, although this is by far a less threatening, longer piece, twisting & turning through it's limited vocab. The machine sound loses it's subtlety, speaking in angry tones only other machines might comprehend. "Bhaktivizew" follows this, being the first of 4 tracks from 1988. A deep synthetic sound over which a continual patter of sound is heard. A noise penetrates & the whole structure concludes. "Amseeeer" has a basement of synthetic sound over which old dancehall music is played. This fades away & other synth noises, following neither tune nor rhythm puncture the sound, scrawling various images across it. "Teri" fades in on dark sounds, a little like some dark & potentially evil film soundtrack, "Quas" is a strange little thing, a rattling, muffled piece, very brief and hard to describe. Suffice to say it's a jumbled sound. "Lighthouse Service" concludes the album, returning us to the present - this is a 1992 piece. It swells & sprawls in warm shapes & textures, while a higher-pitched-but-distant sound flies across the entire swelling structure. It seems akin to DAVID MYERS' feedback music, and actually grows near a sort of ambient organ music (if there could be such a thing). A calming, warming sound with a strong, darker side to it.

To conclude, the closest comparisons I can come to are those mentioned above, especiallyARCANE DEVICE. If you are into MYERS music, then this is ,without doubt the cassette for you.

dUASsEMIcOLCHEIASiNVERTIDAS-Poda/Enco-(Associação Terapêutica Do Ruído-Portugal-2018)

I know dUASsEMIcOLCHEIASiNVERTIDAS and Associação Terapêutica do Ruído since a few years now and I was thinking to make a post about them already last year, lately, I met in Lisboa Boris and Joao and I asked them to write something for this post. Today I am proud to present this band and their music releases+biography and videos. They play a very personal form of noisy free jazz mixed with art-rock and avant-garde propelled bass lines, obsessive guitar riffs + rhythmic weird passages.
As I was very curious about their name, I did dare to ask:  dUASsEMIcOLCHEIASiNVERTIDAS  means "two reversed semi-quavers" or "two reversed sixteenth notes" (or "due semi-cromi invertiti;) and the original idea was to have just a symbol/logo with no name, but then at a certain point the symbol had to become a word and that's how we ended with this name:)
They have out quite a few releases, split tapes, and collaborations, all as a free download on their bandcamp page.

Here a short bio provided by Joao:
"Formed in 2007 by the same sick minds who created the hyperactive Associação Terapêutica do Ruído (ATR), their siamese entity which is dedicated to promoting DIY concerts and releasing and distributing records, the dUASsEMIcOLCHEIASiNVERTIDAS (dSCi) are a collective of noise therapists based in Lisbon that have a curriculum almost as extensive and intense as their music: two EPs ("I" in 2008 and "II" in 2009), a tape (“SADITREVNiSAIEHCLOcIMEsSAUd“ in 2010), a LP (“4” in 2012), two split-tapes (“dSCi/Cangarra” in 2013 and “Chains Split Tape Vol. 2” in 2016), a single (“Poda/Enco” in 2018), a split-vinyl (“dSCi/Parpar split” in 2018), two live albums with their side project of electro-acoustic improvisationdOISsEMIcIRCUITOSiNVERTIDOS, participations in several compilations, countless european tours and hundreds of concerts in the most varied situations and places and with the most diverse groups and musicians, not to mention all the other projects to which they are or have been directly and indirectly linked during these years."

Their last production is a split vinyl with their friends PARPAR and I am attaching here their official press-release.

Associação Terapêutica do Ruído & A Besta present:

After having shared the stage on a number of occasions, including the recent Ñekñek Tour, the infamous dUASsEMIcOLCHEIASiNVERTIDAS (dSCi) and the intrepid PARPAR have just released a split album together!

Recorded in October last year by maestro Milo Gomberoff at his Hukot studio in Barcelona during dSCi's KsChNpSk Tour and PARPAR's Tuktuk Tour and mixed and mastered by the master himself during the following months, the album was released on vinyl on the 18th November at Feira de Vinil de Lisboa, a vinyl record fair that took place at Mercado de Santa Clara in Lisbon.

The record, whose artwork was done by Katafu (Krafica), includes 4 tracks from dSCi: the already well-experimented “Jean-Louis is not a crime”, “Glut” and "Dr. Músculo” (aka "Mr. Muscle", which features the special participation of Pedro Arelo from PARPAR) and the new "Benco", a full version of the B-side track of the single “Poda/Enco” released last January; and 3 tracks from PARPAR with guest André Calvário (aka Jorge) on the bass: new versions of “STOSTO” and “PAIPAI” and the brand new “HUKHUK”, which was made during this recording session (and which is the first improvisation of the duo with a third element).

The vinyl edition is a partnership between the collectives Associação Terapêutica do Ruído (ATR) and A Besta and the labels Epicericords (France), Et Mon Cul C'est Du Tofu? (France), Experimentáculo Records (Portugal), Gaffer Records (France), Lepers (Italy) and Panda Records (Thailand) and it can be ordered by mail through any of these labels (or found at some record stores and distros around the world). And the digital edition is available for free download through the Portuguese netlabel Enough Records (and also in the bandcamps of some of the labels involved on this joint release).
To complete this post I am going to attach here all the useful links about this amazing trio, they are often in tour therefore if it happens that they are in your town I recommend to go to see them live. Thanx to Joao and the rest of the gang for sending me all these info and their help.
Enjoy it.

v.a.-Okupa E Preocupa-(Confronto + Olhos De Raiva-Portugal-1994)

Eclectic and obscure compilation tape edited by those two unknown Portuguese labels Confronto and Olhos De Raiva in 1994.
10 bands from different countries playing HC punk, folk punk, dub and punk rock mostly with political lyrics.
The title of this sampler is obviously referred at the squatting politics of the last millennium.
The cover sleeve reports only the song-titles and the overall quality of the recordings is pretty good.
Enjoy it.

ZUB n7-(Fanzine-Self Released-Portugal-2001)

Graphics art fanzine made of collages, xerox experiments, comics and minimal copy art alterations reminding me some mail art, dadaism and toward the future hidden secret messages.
Few words, No poems, No articles just plain black and white shadows and xerox-art manipulations.
Underground press at its finest, for the lovers of this kind of alter-ego no-sense exploitations.
It came out in a limited edition of 100 copies in September 2001, I guess it is not easy to find nowadays.
Enjoy it.

M.NOMIZED & DAY OF THE DEAD-Le Dragon Rouge-(Kadath-Portugal-c60-1997)

I have alredy posted lots of tapes by M. Nomized,:Multi-talented artist from Paris, France: musician, composer, painter and founder of Fraction Studio. Very prolific and still very active you`ll find tons of info on the net about him.
In this well crafted cassette He joins forces with the bass player Eric Saive (aka Day Of The Dead) to create amazing bass propelled tracks of incredible  experimental ambient dub.
With a very good recording They blow us in a different dimension of  drones acid bass lines and  dreamish passages.
As I didn`t had the cover sleeve of this tape I did ask Michael for it,in fact we are still in touch.A very big thanx to M.Nomized  for providing the cover sleeve and to give me permission to post this little gem.

A great tape work for the lovers of  suicidal dubtronic electro madness.
This is one of my favourite.

N-HEXANA-Nocivo-(Katatonik Tapes-Portugal(?)-c46-199?)

This is another mystery tape.I have received it from Paulo Maldoror of  Nigredo in the beginning of the 90s.As far As I remember He didn`t give me any info about it.
I cannot find informations about this label Katanotik Tapes and there is no address listed,I can only guess it was a Portuguese label or maybe just another project by Paulo using another name.
I passed this rip to Vita Ignes Corpus Lignum blog few years ago,I am going to add here the review written at the time by Crepusculum-thanx mate.:)
Enjoy it.

"had zero info about this incredibly rare projekt other than that {{F@R@W@Y}} received it from Paulo Maldoror quite some time ago.. another one ov those instances here when thee need came to turn to thee friend one can always rely upon for "spreading the sickness" : Mauricio.. turns out it was a projekt ov thee other member ov Portuguese ritual elektronikx projekt Nigredo: Lucrecia Bosch!! when asked how he knew this Mauricio replied: "i am a fucking bible how may times do i have to tell you that??" jeje

thee projekt name N - Hexana likely refers to N - Hexane: a chemical made from crude oil and believed to have potential carcinogenic properties..

thee cassette comes packaged with a transparency overlayed upon silver foil which makes for quite a nice visual effect!! thee texts collaged onto thee cover all refer to warnings about thee known black-lung agent: asbestos..

sonicly thee cassette consists ov two 23 minute sektions ov caustic atmospheric power-elektronikx!! what else would you expect from a projekt so obviously focussed upon these agents ov thee deterioration and maligning ov lived experience?? ov course: an effort at making us aware ov thee detriment inherent in thee toxified industrial waste ridden excesses ov this modern world..

No track listing..

NIGREDO/ABRA HAD ABRA-Split Tape-(Contaminated Productions-Italy-c60-1993)

This split tape was released by three different labels : the Italian  Contaminated Prods and Teatrum Chemicum and the Portuguese Putrefactio.
I spoke already about this  ritual industrial/ambient band with medieval overtones from Portugal called Nigredo when I posted the tapes Cantione Porfanae and CArmina Defunctorum.
Abra Had Abra is an Italian project focused on occultism and paganism, the masterminds behind it are Devis Granziera  and  Stefano Barban.
Contaminated Productions made 31 copies of this tape as requested by the artists-only exchanged them with other tape-productions,it came out in a special  package made of  hand made cover of silver-coated cardboard, includes some kind of fiber/hair, piece of x-ray film and insert with tracklists and infos.Inscription on insert: "This tape is not for sale".
This is the same rip that I passed to Vita Ignes Corpus Lignum blog few years ago.
This will make happy all the fans of esoteric electronix, dark ambient and pagan ritual muzik.

NIGREDO-Cantione Profanae(Putrefactio-Portugal-c46-199?)+NIGREDO-Carmina Defunctorum-(Slaughter Productions-Italy-1994)

Nigredo was the project of Paulo Maldoror and Lucrecia Borsh,I spoke already about them when I posted the tape Pro Defunctis by Sol Niger.
"Processed sounds of ritual esoteric feedback distortions mixed with reverberated horns, distant chants and restrained clangs of metal bring us into a dark world of distant voices calling for the awakening of the soul for a new birth."

Those 2 tapes are a great example of esoteric electronickx!!!A must for all the lovers of ritual dark ambient and magick messages.
Cantiones Profanae was released on Putrefactio in Portugal, this was the personal label of Paulo Maldoror,I kind of re-call, it was 1992 while Carmina Defunctorum came out on the Italian legendary cassette label Slaughter Productions managed by Marco Corbelli aka Atrax Morgue in 1994.
I am including here the flyer of Cantione Profanae tape and a slide show from my youtube channel .

SOL NIGER-Pro Defunctis-(Putrefactio-Portugal-c60-1992)

In 1992 I was in touch with Paulo Maldoror of Putrafactio label from Lisbon(Portugal) and we exchanged few tapes.
I passed this one as digital format to Vita Ignes Corpus Lignum blog back in 2010,I re-post it here as that link is dead now.
I am adding the flyer and a slide show from my youtube channel,I am re-posting also the very good review written by Crepusculum, big thanx to him.

"There is a persistent belief in alchemaic and hermetic tradition in the existence of two suns: a hidden one of pure "philosophical gold," consisting of the essential fire conjoined with aether, and the apparent one of profane "material gold." The "dark, consuming fire" of the material sun leads to its being called the "Dark" or "Black Sun."

Sol Niger was thee projekt ov Paolo Maldoror [Nigredo & Maldoror Tapes] from Lisboa, Portugal. Aside from a couple ov compilation tracks; it would appear this was thee only release for which he utilised this moniker [though there also appear to be two variations ov this cassete where thee next to last song appear as either Ars Moriendi or Maledictio].. am incredibly thankfull to {{F@R@W@Y}} for gifting this very rare cassette ov early 90's occult- industrial from thee Portuguese label: Putrefactio to our blog!!
Officium Defunctorum - refers to a musical setting of the Office of the Dead [a prayer cycle of the Liturgy of the Hours in the Roman Catholic Church, said for the repose of the soul of a deceased] composed by the Spanish Renaissance composer, Tomás Luis de Victoria in 1603. Thee track here consists ov hauntingly effected chants which evoke a darkly beatific atmospheric presence.. at about six minutes into thee piece are interspersed quiet clangs of bells for a rather short sektion.. only then to be abandoned to thee droning choral presence with it's great power!!

Obscurari Sidera [obscuring seducer?] draws one within; to places non-illumined with indecipherable feminine vocalisations mingled amongst trancing waves ov magnificent sonorism.. five minutes into thee piece the deeply effecting shriek ov a woman's cry pulls us even further into thee emerging dark atmospheres within; where there are chanting voices and beatific violin amidst thee roaring; as ov powerfull winds..

Claudatur [be it closed..] roars and distantly clangs bells; becoming quieter, and suspending us with drones amidst beatific feminine chorus; becoming alternatingly haunting & magnificent!! later thee drones become more shrill before dissipating amidst renewed female choral incantation..

Lucce Tenebrae [gloomy light] consists ov indecipherable vocal utterances making their powerfull presence amidst powerfull drones and an effecting harpsichord progression!!

Sol Niger Omnipotens [omnipotent black sun] begins with quiet sparse percussions shrouded in reverberations which increase their intensity.. suddenly a sonic void; then magnificent atmospheres [ it is as if the prima materia has reached putrefactio [the burning away ov all preconceptions] as one is held within an awe-inspiring ambiance which sustains for quite some time before becoming distant..

Ars Moriendi [The Art of Dying] is the name of two related Latin texts dating from about 1415 and 1450 which offer advice on the protocols and procedures of a good death, explaining how to "die well" according to Christian precepts of the late Middle Ages. It was written within the historical context of the effects of the macabre horrors of the Black Death 60 years earlier and consequent social upheavals of the 15th century.. sonicly: insidious atmospheres prevail; with scarce hidden choral utterances barely making themselves perceptible.. towards thee end there are a few scarce clangs and a sudden cessation..

Ecclesiastes - refers to the book ov thee Hebew Bible which emphatically proclaims all the actions of man to be inherently vain, futile, empty, meaningless, temporary, transitory, or fleeting.. powerfull vocal chants are present amidst the harshest ov feedbacks for this cassette; when suddenly all ceases, and restrained percussion makes a reverberating presence for thee concluding sektion ov this most darkly illumined ov sonorous experiences!!
