GRUNT/ORAL CLIMAX-Split Tape-(Freak Animal Records-Finland-c30-1995)

Grunt was formed in Finland during spring 1993 to create hard audio havoc. Its early incarnations operated with few other names, before settling into Grunt and making the first officially published works. After 20 years of activity, it is still going strong. Various styles of noise electronics are always hammered with such pressure it usually transforms into known Grunt-noise, even if new methods and approaches are added. Various interests, moods and approaches and different kinds of topics have been used during the years. Strong visuals and lyrics are the most well known to people.
Since the early days, Grunt has been merely part of international power electronics-noise scene. There has never been a desire to attract attention widely. There has never been attempts to be credible within academic noise circles, performance art or modern industrial culture. Nor promote it in media outside the core of noise-underground. However, neither there is a clear desire to follow genre restrictions. When invitations have happened, Grunt has been featured in documentaries, newspaper articles, playing together with punk, metal and gothic bands as well as among performance art events.
Grunt is tightly connected to the vision of Freak Animal Records label and has also a handful of other forms, what can be understood as projects of their own or simply branches slightly separated from the main project.(from his webpage)
Oral Climax is a grindcore band from Lithuania active during the 90s, they released many productions as a split with other band/projects.
Enjoy it.

v.a.-Silent Talking-(Irre Tapes-c60-Germany-1990)

Production number 28 by this astonishing German tape label, covered in this blog many times now.
For whoever missed these old posts :
Irre Tapes label was run by Matthias Lang which evolved out of the IRRE Fanzine he published regularly during the early 1980s covering New Wave, Post Punk and the German Underground.
With his 3rd Tape Compilation Ein Herz In Not he started IRRE Tapes which was mainly active in the late 80s/early 90s and released material by the likes of Brume, Maeror Tri and City Of Worms and loads of lesser-known and stylistic different artists (Unpleasant Surprise, The Fuckedtones, Magic Moments At Twilight Time, Doc Wör Mirran) covering the whole range of the Independent Underground from Experimental Electronica to Guitar Pop.
In true DIY spirit, he supported the international network of small labels and fanzines through editing the free IRRE Newsletter to spread info and contacts and writing occasional reviews for various publications. Most of his Compilations should be seen as an attempt to promote lesser-known artists and labels. Without a doubt, he was one of the driving forces of the German Tape Scene.
He finally called the label days quits in 1994/1995 but soon re-appeared as collaborating and networking artist Mr. Moto (2).(from Discogs)
Enjoy it.

AMAE Asociacion Mail-Artistas Espanoles-(Bulletin-Spain-1995)

AMAE was a small mail art bulletin edited and distributed by the Spanish mail art association during the  mid-90s.
Inside this second number, we`ll find a few articles about the mail art and tons of mail art invitations, flyers, mail art projects and related issues.
Most of the stuff is in Spanish, some other in English. The graphic layout is chaotic and messy yet it has all the charm of a pure mail art contribution.
Definitely a great tool to approach the Mail Art network.
Enjoy it.

MORBIFIC-Realm Of Blood-(Self Released-Singapore-1991)

Morbific was a death metal band hailing from Yishun (Singapore) and active in the early 90s.
This cassette is their first demo, they released another one called "Obscure Dreams" in 1993.
The recording is pretty chaotic and noisy yet it fits well with their style of brutal death metal.
Definitely a tape for the lovers of certain kind of obscure extreme metal.
Enjoy it.

THE OBSCENES-In The MIddle Of Nowhere-(Not On Label-Italy-1993)

A rather strange vinyl and project of which I have very little info, this is probably a one-off project by a duo from Chiavari in Liguria region(Northern Italy), amongst the thanx I have noticed the name: Mauro Guazzotti aka MGZ.
The music evolves in cut-ups, an hot-line phone call, cheap drum machine and broken electric guitars, backward vocals, strange synth passages, some no-sense noises and more asphyxiating jingles with a low-fi quality recording. As overall the deep abstract sense of nothingness is there to stay.
Some stuff is definitely kind of funny if you understand the Italian language.
Enjoy it.

SELF DEFENSE-(Fanzine-The Infoshop of Kathmandu-Nepal-2012)

A very nice and short fanzine made by the people managing the infoshop in Kathmandu in Nepal, very possible involved in Rai Ko Ris.

As the subtitle says "A Collection of articles, poems, writings + cartoons about women"! There is a mix and mash of writings, well done with passion and love, you`ll find here quite a few ideas to research.

Phoolan Devi(1963-2001): her life and struggle, very interesting indeed.
Some personal writings against machismo and sexism, some poetries and some drawings.
I was really touched by some of these writings, some stuff is in Nepali with English translations , some other in English and some in Nepali only.
Enjoy it.

DAWSON-Second Peel Session 01/12/1991-(Unreleased-UK-1991)

Back in the early 90s, I was in touch with Dawson, They kindly sent me an amazing tape with some live recordings by various Scottish post-hardcore noise bands, the tape also contained 2 Peel sessions by Dawson! Unfortunately, I lost the letter that came with this cassette but I reckon these recordings were not released and I cannot find any info about it. I left them as waves.
I already wrote about this fantastic band: compared to names such as Butthole Surfers and Minutemen, Dawson throws in their songs sheer violence and electric energy mixing some avant-guard fast chaotic guitars riffs, math rhythms, weird vocals and experimental jingles that make their music original and difficult to categorize.
Coming out from the very lively Noize Post Hardcore punk scene from the end of last century, they shared common interests and sweats with StretchheadsWhirling Pig Dervish and  Archbishop Kebab, all very original bands hailing from Scotland.  An FB page about them is here, where you can see old flyers and pics, a new band formed by the 3rd era Dawson musicians are called Sumshapes and their Bandcamp page is here, you can listen/buy their album Cabin Biscuits released June 30, 2017.
I guess there is no need to talk about John Peel and his famous radio show, all the music lovers around the world should know John Peel already. The recording of this tape is excellent.
Enjoy it.

CULTO DEL CARGO-7" Collection-(Tunes From he Dumpster-Italy-2014)

A cargo cult is a belief system among members of a relatively undeveloped society in which adherents practice superstitious rituals hoping to bring modern goods supplied by a more technologically advanced society. These cults, millenarian in nature, were first described in Melanesia in the wake of contact with more technologically advanced Western cultures. The name derives from the belief which began among Melanesians in the late 19th and early 20th centuries that various ritualistic acts such as the building of an aeroplane runway will result in the appearance of material wealth, particularly highly desirable Western goods (i.e., "cargo"), via Western aeroplanes.
(From  Wikipedia)
This is the Italian D-Beat Crust band from Treviso formed in 2010, featuring members of Gelo (3), Caprosmorto, Timothy, Terrorarium and Corporation of Consumption and this tape contains all the 7 inches released previously.

Their actual webpage is here where you can find info, contacts, videos and much more.

MALDEOJO Cuadernos De Critica Social N2-(Magazine-Spain-2001)

A  big magazine with in-depth and long articles about situationism, social critics and philosophy. Some articles are translated from the French originals, some others are in their mother tongue.
I have found some info about this very interesting magazine on the blog Industrias Mikuerpos the article there is very well done and long but only in the Spanish language. I thought to translate into English the very introduction in order to give you some basic info so you get an idea about it.
A big thanx to my friend Miguel Lorca for gifting me this amazing magazine around 15 years ago and for kindly translating this introduction just a few days ago.
Enjoy it if you are Spanish literate.

Introduction from Industrias Mikuerpos

The short-lived existence of Maldeojo as a collective of criticism and social action is largely due to the fact that it really wasn´t about a constituted collective on previously established patterns, but about a “circle” of discussion on common topics that aimed to relaunch critical theory on the basis of the rereading and upgrading of situationists legacy. The group began to take shape during a meeting on reading and discussion of Debord´s “The Society of the Spectacle” promoted by several Madrilenian fanzines at Aurora Intermitente foundation in 1999. During the year 2000 two issues of magazine Maldeojo. Cuadernos de crítica y acción social were published, they were oriented towards the critique of technological domination in a spectacular tone and quite influenced by French critical currents in the wave of Encyclopédie des Nuisances. Following text was published on Zehar magazine 47-48, monographic issue “thinking the edition” (Gipuzkoa, Arteleku, 2002)

Therabaqud Leic ‎– Theatragrammadhon-(Clockwork Tapes-Germany-1992)

Another great cassette by this Italian artist already covered in this blog a few times. This is the project of Gianlugi Russolo, also involved in Subliminale, TV Satanico, S. Biasin Trio.
With Theatragrammadhon Gianluigi offers to us 2 tracks of post-industrial esoteric ambient noise touching some drone, some pagan messages, and some ethereal hypnotic music.
Clockwork Tapes was a  independent label founded in the in 80's and resurrected in 2011 as a CD-Label, with a focus on Harsh Noise, Dark Noise, Ambient, and Minimal Music. Its actual webpage is here.
Enjoy it.

ALVARS ORKESTER-Woodtrip-(SPH-Portugal-1992)

Alvars Orkester is the Swedish project by Jan Svensson and  Joachim Nordwall, both musicians involved in various labels and projects since the end of the 80s.
SPH was a  tape label from Portugal, created by Fernando Cerqueira (a member of Ras.Al.Ghul) and featured a wide range of work from artists like Brume, Alvars Orkester and Maeror Tri.
Here a review originally published on Soft Watch and then re-published on the Discogs page dedicated to this tape.
Enjoy it.

Side A opens with the title track "Woodtrip". Waves of warm, muted sound sweep in, suggesting heat or isolation, The sound gradually builds, the waves flowing across each other in complementary washes, some deep and resonant, some higher-yet-dulled to give an overall pacifying effect. There is no beat, no rhythmic structure, merely wave-upon-wave of swelling sound. This night be described as New Age Industrial - it's a warm factory/machine sound. The depth of sound abates, leaving the higher tones to describe languid shapes and textures ethereal mists hiding unknown things - the thrill of possible danger coupled with an overall sense of security. "Dance In Halfway Under The Earth" swells in on darker, more Industrial sounds, and the higher pitches give it a desolate, isolated sound once more. Feedback flows through the sound, deep and rich, yet full of potential power, an understated threat that it could at any second smash through your speakers like a bolt of electric blue. These sounds follow each other, complementing each other despite their unusual qualities. It's a long & frankly wonderful piece of sound, reminding me of the little I've heard from ARCANE DEVICE.

Side B opens with "Ihn", rising on warm, even hot electronics a little like THROBBING GRISTLE did with their Industrial Introduction, although this is by far a less threatening, longer piece, twisting & turning through it's limited vocab. The machine sound loses it's subtlety, speaking in angry tones only other machines might comprehend. "Bhaktivizew" follows this, being the first of 4 tracks from 1988. A deep synthetic sound over which a continual patter of sound is heard. A noise penetrates & the whole structure concludes. "Amseeeer" has a basement of synthetic sound over which old dancehall music is played. This fades away & other synth noises, following neither tune nor rhythm puncture the sound, scrawling various images across it. "Teri" fades in on dark sounds, a little like some dark & potentially evil film soundtrack, "Quas" is a strange little thing, a rattling, muffled piece, very brief and hard to describe. Suffice to say it's a jumbled sound. "Lighthouse Service" concludes the album, returning us to the present - this is a 1992 piece. It swells & sprawls in warm shapes & textures, while a higher-pitched-but-distant sound flies across the entire swelling structure. It seems akin to DAVID MYERS' feedback music, and actually grows near a sort of ambient organ music (if there could be such a thing). A calming, warming sound with a strong, darker side to it.

To conclude, the closest comparisons I can come to are those mentioned above, especiallyARCANE DEVICE. If you are into MYERS music, then this is ,without doubt the cassette for you.
