SCAT OPERA - About Time - (Music For Nations-UK-1991)

SCAT OPERA were a four piece funk metal band formed in 1987 in London, UK, by Ernie Brennan (vocals), Steve Yates (guitar), Michael Forry (bass) and Mark Diment (drums). They recorded several well-received demos before picking up prestigious support slots with Faith No More in the autumn of 1989. Though comparisons to that band followed, in truth Scat Opera played at greater velocity and with more precise musical definition. The pieces, however, were not entirely in place until they signed a contract with Music For Nations in the spring of 1990. They made their debut a year later with "About Time", recorded at Slaughterhouse Studios and produced by Colin Richardson. Michael Forry left the band and was replaced by Leicester’s REV HEAD John O’Reilly. A UK tour as support to GAYE BYKERS ON ACID ensued, before returning to the studio (this time Windings Studio in Wales) with Richardson for a second set, "Four Gone Confusion", to be released in October 1992. Again the music incorporated elements drawn from funk (particularly apparent in bass player O’Reilly’s slapping technique), jazz and metal. After the band split, John O’Reilly moved back to Leicestershire to co-found DEADLINE with ex-METEORS Austin H. Stones, then FUDGE during the late 1990’s.

SCAT OPERA drummer and one of founding members Mark Diment passed away in 2016.(info from Discogs) facebook page

SHOVLHED-Proud As A Moose(Incentive-K7-Canada-1989)+Stove Boy Serves Daily Special-(Konkurrel-Holland-1992)

Recorded Spring 1989 in Victoria, BC. Knobs and faders by Scott Henderson with arguably dodgy input from Ken and Chris. Converted to digital using a tape deck, some software and a couple of copies of the source material I found in an old shoe box. It's DIY punk on tape, this is what it sounds like, get over it.Released June 1, 1989. All songs written by Scott except where extensively noted in the Footnotes and Citations document which was unfortunately destroyed by Tom Holliston during a competitive duck herding mishap in September 1993.

Recorded Spring 1990 in Victoria, BC. Shovlhed was Chris Buck, Scott Henderson and Ken Kempster. All music and lyrics by Scott except where noted.released January 1, 1992 Produced by John Wright and Shovlhed.Mastered by Cec English and several other high rolling business suit types including Craig Bougie who was asked to leave the room on more than one occasion during the process. Originally manufactured and distributed by De Konkurrent / Konkurrel in The Netherlands. Shovlhed logo by Audrey A. Band pic by Cathy Phillips. Royal standard of Tunis 1907 by Order of the Queen. Ken and Scott still live and play music in Victoria. Chris passed away in 2004. He is remembered fondly by all those who loved him even though he eventually drove us all freekn' crazy.

An american project developed by members of the legendary Victims Family! In fact guitarist Ralph Spight and  bassist  Larry Boothroyd join Jason Christian to create creative and  original tunes.

Expect broken rhytms, fast changes, jazzy melodies mixed with powerful  riffs. Some kind of HC punk is there yet it is all a fantastic mash up of various influences. For the lovers of Victims Family and related projects.

Big Thanx to Puppybarf for this original vinyl rip.

Archbishop Kebab -Beyond Ma Ken-(Trottel Records-Hungary-1993)

The second LP by this original Scottish band, I have already posted their first album released in 1989.
Archbishop Kebab was a Scottish Avant-Hardcore collective formed in 1986 in Edinburgh. They had a 13-year life span up to 1999.
1989 saw the release of their first LP, produced by Tim Ellis (Jackdaw With Crowbar) and the start on the first of many European tours they shared with likeminded groups - a.o. The Ex, Dog Faced Hermans, Badgewearer, Dawson and the Stretchheads.
In 1993 they released their second LP 'Beyond Ma Ken' recorded in the studio of the Hungarian label Trottel Records.
Then came along 'Heeliegoleerie And Scunnered (but cheerie)' partly recorded in Italy; the final Album 'Bellyhunting', recorded in 1997. (info from Discogs).
In this album some crazy free jazz core influences take over their amazing post-no wave hardcore yet they remain an exquisite avant-guard phenomenon.
Enjoy it.

MAUSER FK-The Movie-(Vögelspin Records-Holland-1994)

A fantastic album by this great jazzcore band from Holland active in the early 90s.I spoke about them when I posted their great cassette: White Man`s Overbite which they self-released in 1992.
This album instead came out on Vögelspin Records: Dutch punk label, founded in 1979 by Nitwitz to release their first record Nitwitz - Nitwitz on their own label. Located in Amsterdam, The Netherlands (Holland).
Here few info from Jazzcore74 Youtube Channel:
Yet another great band from the Netherlands (Amsterdam) that was directly influenced by Victims Family (like Jam Jar or BEP) and that released this one and only album, a jewel in Jazzcore to make it simple. They played around Europe in the 1993-96 years, even had tour dates in France with Victims Family and one can feel other slight touches in the likes of NoMeansNo or Rhythm Pigs and more when listening to their wicked tunes. We're talking Hit-Tunes here, of course. Line-up: Vocals: Hank. Bass-vocals: Dick. Guitar: Joeri. Drums: Marcel (aka Marzel ex-BGK, Nitwitz and now playing in Norton)
Enjoy it.

ORTOPEDIC QUARTET-Fratture-(Self Released-Italy-2013)

Great cd by this amazing band from Caserta (Southern Italy),  I have already posted their live tape recorded at Tien`A` Ment Squat in Naples on the 8th of June 1996.
They re-formed in 2013 just to re-record some of  their tracks in a proper studio recording.
Therefore in this totally DIY Cd-r,  you `ll find 4 tracks, from that tape, completely  re-recorded and 2 more tracks from the same tape re-elaborated in a studio!
Very good musicians playing a sort of crossover mixing Jazzcore with some personal rock and funky/swing passages.
As far as I know, they have not distributed this cd, there are only a few copies around given away as a gift to close friends.
For all the lovers of creative muzik.
Enjoy it.

VICTIMS FAMILY-In Concerto A El Paso-(El Paso Produzioni-Italy-1989)

Victims Family is an American hardcore punk band founded in 1984 in Santa Rosa, California. They play an explosive form of jazz core, very skilled musicians they mix in their HC punk some weird jazz passages and funky rhythms!!Probably one of the first band playing this musical genre.A discogs page about them is here, and this is their official webpage.I saw them live few times and they blew everybody away.Great band, amazing original music. This tape has a good recording and deliver us their great energy as live act.
I wrote already about El Paso in fact I posted few other tape-productions by this legendary italian squat.
El Paso  is a big squat in Torino(Northern Italy)active since 1987,one of the oldest in Europe ,it is still squatted and very active.
This tape was recorded on the 5th September 1989 by Nautilus
Anarchic/antagonist collective located in Torino. They promote a do-it-yourself attitude and release books, pamphlets, documents and records. There's no copyright on any of their productions.
Enjoy it.

MEXICAN POWER AUTHORITY-Haiku...Gesundheit-(Break Even Records-Canada-1994)

Here the legendary tape-work by the mighty Mexican Power Authority...a tape that blows away all the grindcore fans mixing weird passages of  jazzcore,hc punk, fast drums and speed guitar solos to arrive to a pure chaos of creativity with no musical borders.
Here a nice review by Short Fast + Loud zine:
"MPA remain one of the least understood and most underrated bands from the ‘90s underground. Their style was entirely unique, borrowing from hardcore and grind, yet adding so many off the wall elements that the end results never quite equated with their contemporaries. Imagine Muppets who studied free form jazz playing punk rock songs with the RUINS at a high school music recital with students playing recorders. Odd clarinet sounds and yipping vox offset the spastic punkiness that abounds. Kev from the almighty NEOS is in this band, but don’t go expecting straight forward thrash. Maybe someday MPA will get the recognition they deserve, but for now check out this cult favorite if you want something completely beyond the radar."
In September 2007, MPA regrouped after a decade hiatus and began rehearsing material spanning their original six-year existence to prepare for their first performances in ten years.
During 2008, the group focused exclusively on composing new material, with legendary local drummer Jon London completing the line-up in February 2009. The group will release a new LP in 2011.

A great tape issued with hand-numbered cover artwork and tape-labels.Inside the case embedded informations sheet. For all the lovers of certain crazy fast music with some weird genius hiding throu the musical notes/rhythms and the lyrics are funny too.
Enjoy it.

Yet another great band from the Netherlands (Amsterdam) that was directly influenced by Victims Family  and that released  one and only album "We `re right...", a jewel in Jazzcore to make it simple.
They played around Europe in the 1993-96 years, even had tour dates in France with Victims Family and one can feel other slight touches in the likes of NoMeansNo or Rhythm Pigs and more when listening to their wicked tunes.
We're talking Hit-Tunes here, of course.
Line-up:
Vocals: Hank. Bass-vocals: Dick. Guitar: Joeri. Drums: Marcel (aka Marzel ex-BGK, Nitwitz and now playing in Norton)-(info taken from youtube)

I have not much to add as I have no info about this band,I can only say that it`s a great demo, good recording and  very well played.
