GORGONZOLA LEGS-Salmon Squeezing In Weird Weirs-(Exart-Holland-c60-1986)
1984 was the year in which Gert Jan Prins (www.gjp.info/) visited Hessel and Nicole at their apartment on the 11th floor, overlooking a big industrial landscape. Recording-sessions were started at Gert Jan’s “Fish Warehouse” studio. Gert Jan Prins, Hessel Veldman, Herman te Loo and Jos van Duyne became GORGONZOLA LEGS. Hundreds and hundreds of hours of “live”-recording sessions took place. At some of these sessions, other musicians were present, such as Jos van Ommen, Ruud Junge, Martijn Swart and Masaki Oishi. At the end of 1984 “GORGONZOLA LEGS” was released. On this one hour cassette, the first mixed recordings could be heard. The group also wanted to do concerts and so GORGONZOLA LEGS more and more became a “live”-band.
In 1986 a second tape was released, entitled “SALMON SQUEEZING IN WEIRD WEIRS’, a new compilation of “Fish Warehouse”-recordings. “BUNKER” was recorded live at the Bunker in Rotterdam, October ’86. The complete concert could be heard on another EXART-issue. In 1987 the powerful voice of the Japanese singer Masaki Oishi gave a new dimension to the sound of GORGONZOLA LEGS. Hours and hours of recordings were made. At the end of the year, 6 hours of mixed material had to be remixed to L.P.-format. In April 1988 EXART decided to make it Holland’s first independent C.D.-release: “PISCATORIAL DEBRIS’. At the same time, with the great help of Henry van Kleeff, the “PISCATORIAL DEBRIS” video was made. A beautiful 20 minutes sound sculpture video was realized. The video and C.D. got a lot of international attention and was performed on several big music/video festivals. During the late 80s, GORGONZOLA LEGS-material was also released on labels in Portugal, Italy and the U.S.A.(from djima.blogspot.com)

EXART (label, studio and archive) was founded by Hessel Veldman and Nick Nicole (2) in October 1982. In 1978 Hessel had started composing experimental music and before 1978 he was playing the guitar in several local blues- and rock bands. The label wanted to spread new experimental and improvised music. The studio was the place to improvise, compose, record and make radio-programmes, mixes and remixes. At the same time, Veldman started to preserve sounds in the Exart archive. The label ended its activities in 1995, although there are rumours that Veldman has plans to do digitalized reissues of some of the releases.
Variations on the label name (Exart Cassettes, Exart K7) are used on some of the releases.

CULT OF THE WOMB-Cult Of The Womb-(Inner-X-Musick-USA-c50-1986)
A short-lived John Zewizz side project. Cult Ov The Womb (Initially called Cult Of The Womb) was a solo project of Sleep Chamber founder John Zewizz. Cult of the womb released two cassettes and a few tracks on various artists releases between in late 1985 and 1986 all on Zewizz's Label XXX (Inner-X-Musick). Cult Ov The Womb was non-musick. Both full-length cassette releases were collages of sound centred around TV news/shows clips about James Oliver Huberty and the San Ysidro McDonald's massacre, as well as VHS samples from porn movies and main-stream movies like "Apocalypse Now" and "Taxi Driver". Very little to no actual instruments were used.
Inner-X-Musick was a label run by John Zewizz of Sleep Chamber.
Starting in 1979, the name of this label began as Triple-X (or sometimes XXX Organisation). Sometimes it was also called Innersleeve. The name Inner-X did not solidify as the main name for this label until around 1986.

OH` DEV-Don`t Push-(Eksakt Records-Holland-1986)
According to band members, the name comes from a populist 50ties Hollywood movie. The female ‘sexbomb’ drops the line “oh’ dev”.
Oh’Dev basic line up was Ruud – drums, Andre (Meer Staal) – guitar and Dirk – Bas. It could be that Dirk was not always in the band, but he played on the Limbabwe recordings. The vocalist could change. In the downloads below two different vocalists are mentioned: Harry (also guitar) and Hans.
The music is a kind of ‘noise-rock’ strongly influenced by Sonic Youth, Scratch Acid and such. Mostly I like bands in the style a-la Oh’Dev, but somehow I never seem to be able to listen through a full release of them. After two songs it starts to bore me and I lose interest. Andre’s guitar playing is based on no skills (he cannot play for real). Although creative in Meer Staal with percussion and vocals, on the guitar he seems to be limited and the noise becomes an assembled repeating structure that loses attention after 5 minutes. A funny anecdote to this is that Andre called himself after the guitar he played: ‘King Zolo’. A cheap piece of crap dumped by Sonic Youth.
Both vocalists didn’t manage to capture the listeners either.
Oh’Dev tried to ‘make’ it. They took every gig offered. Manage to do a few shows abroad and released more records on other, lesser underground than Limbabwe, indie labels. Despite what members try to make us believe nowadays, they never achieved a status in fame and creativity like some other Limbabwe bands (Meer Staal, Pandemonium,….). None of their releases sold for real. The band float(s) well on smooth bizznix talk from the drummer.
Defunct label from Tilburg, The Netherlands that ceased to exist in 1990.
Enjoy it.

P16.D4 & Swimming Behavior Of The Human Infant–Nichts Niemand Nirgends Nie! -(Double Vinyl-Selektion-Germany-1986)
P16D4 was a German band whose music bordered on the industrial and on the cacophonous. On their debut album "Kühe In 1/2 Trauer" (Selektion, 1982) they managed to fuse the playful irrationality of dadaism and the oppressive tones of expressionism. Roger Schönauer and Ewald Weber focused on an austere art and technique of loop and tape manipulation. Stefan E. Schmidt joined the ensemble on Distruct (Selektion,1984), a deconstructed remix of sound sources provided by friends in the industrial scene. The double album Nichts Niemand Nirgends Nie (1985) delved into musique concrete and electronic improvisation. Tionchor (Sonoris, 1987) collects revised rarities.
Swimmign Behaviour Of The Human Infant is Achim Wollscheid a media artist whose work over the past 20 years has been at the forefront of experimental music. He has performed and presented installation projects internationally. His work in sound has led to an interest in the relation between sound, light and architectural space, which he pursues through public, interactive and electronic projects. He is a founding member of SELEKTION, an organisation for the production and distribution of information systems. His book, The Terrorized Term, was published by SELEKTION in 1999. Today he still works as an artist for light and sound installations in Frankfurt/Main.(info from Discogs)
German label (Frankfurt-based) for mainly experimental music and musique concrete. Evolved out of the art-punk-label "Wahrnehmungen", which ran in 1980-1981. Many electronic releases of various kinds. Run by Achim Wollscheid and Ralf Wehowsky.Their actual webpage is here.

SMERSH-The Part Of The Animal That People Don`t Like-(Dead Man`s Curve-UK-1986)
Smersh was Mike Mangino and Chris Shepard. And from 1981 until 1994 they released far too many cassette tapes. They also contributed to far too many compilations throughout the known world. In the early eighties, they established a unique sound that is known and loved, combining cheap electronics and wild guitar sounds with distorted vocals. They were, in fact, a bit The Ramones of the industrial scene. But were they industrial? The Smersh sound had so many faces that it is next to impossible to categorize their music. Smersh recorded on most Monday evenings for a couple of hours. Each song was improvised over the course of the evening and then recorded. Once it was finished they never played it again. They never rehearsed, they couldn't read music,
and they never played live.(from their official webpage)
Here a very interesting interview with Mike Mangino conducted by Dmitry Vasilyev in August 2000.
Electro, industrial label from UK, founded in 1986 by Dave Henderson, who had earlier run the X Tract label. DMC ended when Red Rhino Records distribution collapsed in 1988.

SMERSH-The Tuna Is An Ugly Fish-(Atlas King-USA-1986)
Beat studio guru Mike Mangino (Pink Noise, Pop-Tarts) and Chris Shepard (Pop-Tarts) formed Smersh as an experimental big-beat techno/industrial project and began releasing cassettes in 1981. Smersh recorded improvised cuts every Monday night, released countless cassettes on their own label, Atlas King, and were featured on more compilations than you can track down. They never played live, never played the same track more than once.(from Discogs)
Here a very interesting interview with Mike Mangino conducted by Dmitry Vasilyev in August 2000.
